Unless your table predates the early 20th century, it's probably finished with lacquer. Although lacquer is a durable finish, it does sustain scratches -- especially on tabletops. Most scratches aren't difficult to level out with fresh lacquer, but you may have a problem matching the sheen of the area you repaired with the rest of the table. For this reason, it's often best to treat the entire tabletop, which isn't as difficult as it sounds. You can choose wax, furniture polish or spray lacquer in an aerosol can, depending on the sizes of the scratches.
1
Remove dirt from the finish by washing it with a mild cleaner, such as an ounce of dish soap added to a gallon of warm water.
2
Repair minor scratch damage by applying a coat of paste wax. Choose a light- or dark-colored wax, depending on the color of the table. Spread it liberally on the finish, and buff it with a clean cloth. If you prefer not to wax your table, mix equal parts of lemon juice and olive oil in a dish, and rub the mixture into the scratches with a clean, lint-free cloth.
3
Repair scratches that have penetrated through the finish and exposed the wood by first recoloring the wood. You can sometimes do this by rubbing the wood with a nutmeat, such as a pecan or walnut; the natural oils leach into the wood and darken it. You can also apply wood stain with an artist's brush.
4
Level a large scratch, after coloring the wood, by sanding it lightly with 320-grit sandpaper, then dabbing it with lacquer-based clear nail polish, using the applicator that comes in the bottle. The lacquer will soften the old finish, and the scratch should disappear. You can get similar results using nail polish remover, which is a lacquer thinner.
5
Blend the sheen of the repair with that of the rest of the table by spraying on a single coat of clear lacquer, using an aerosol can. Be sure to spray a wet coat -- the surface should be uniformly shiny after spraying. Wait two hours for the lacquer to dry before waxing or polishing the table.

Tip
- If there are several scratches, you can level them all at once by spraying a coat of lacquer on the entire table. Be sure to remove any wax on the table with mineral spirits and to wash the table with detergent before spraying it.
Warning
- Ventilate the room and wear a respirator when spraying lacquer. The fumes are toxic.
